On the occasion of Hong Kong Handover, Shanghai Association for Science and Technology (SAST) and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) cosponsored Shanghai and Hong Kong Symposium on Science and Technology in 1997, and they have been cosponsoring the symposiums successively in Shanghai and Hong Kong every two years since then.

Objectives
Alternated between Hong Kong and Shanghai, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Symposium on Science and Technology is co-organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Shanghai Association for Science and Technology. The 8th Symposium will be held in Hong Kong from 4 to 5 November 2011. It aims at fostering collaboration in contributing to the exchange of technical knowledge and information between the two cities. The participants will include business leaders, engineering professionals, government officials and academia from Hong Kong and Shanghai.


Theme
The theme of the Symposium is "Sustainable Development in Urban Cities – Could Science and Technology Help".
